Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are the drawings on the new AWI QSI CD available for CAD?
No, the illustrations on the CD are not CAD drawings, but can be cut-and-pasted from the CD on to a layer in most CAD packages.

2. Where can I find and purchase AWI mouldings like those illustrated in the Quality Standards in Section 300, Standing and Running Trim?
It 's important for all of us to note that the Design Ideas sections of the 8th Edition Quality Standards Illustrated (QSI) are NOT intended as a catalog for off-the-shelf items. The moulding profiles, in particular, are intended as a starting place for the design professional; an illustration of something that is possible from which they are encouraged to design the unique moulding their client desires. As a result, it is not too likely that an exact AWI profile is ready for purchase as a stock pattern. More likely, the fine architectural woodworking fabricator with whom you are working will create a set of moulding knives for the profile shape and size specified by the design team, and will run the quantity of moulding required in the species of wood specified in the contract documents. In order to find a woodworking partner, should you need one, we encourage you to use the AWI web site member directory, searching on any criteria you might find useful.

3. Why did gaps open on the installed woodwork - previously none were evident?
Gaps open on the installed woodwork due to uncontrolled changes in temperature and humidity. Learn why in AWI's comprehensive advisory concerning prevention of dimensional problems in architectural woodwork products as the result of uncontrolled relative humidity. It is further intended as a reminder of the natural dimensional properties of wood and wood-based products such as plywood, particleboard, and high pressure decorative laminate (HPDL) and of the routine and necessary care — and responsibilities — which must be assumed by those involved.

4. I am not certain that the woodwork project complies with the AWI Quality Standards. How can I get an independent compliance inspection on a woodwork project that is NOT registered with the AWI Quality Certification Program (QCP)?
AWI, in cooperation with the American Arbitration Association (AAA), maintains a quality compliance inspection service that is available to design and construction professionals for architectural woodwork projects manufactured and installed within the continental boundaries of the United States. The program is only available on a woodwork project where contract specifications reference the Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards and other inspection program conditions and criteria are met.

5. Where can go or who can I contact for more detailed technical help and  information?
Best way to obtain detailed technical help is to email help@awinet.org

Please note, AWI Affiliate, Supplier and Manfacturing Members receive priority assistance before non-members.

6. How can I send in my suggestions for changes and improvements in the Quality Standards Illustrated?
The Quality Standards Board of Review meets periodically to review all suggestions for change and improvement.  We welcome input from anyone interested in helping our industry standards to become a better document.
